La Fortuna Waterfall: Water, Rainforest and Volcano

La Fortuna Waterfall falling through lush vegetation

A few kilometers from downtown La Fortuna de San Carlos, La Fortuna Waterfall drops about 70 meters through the rainforest, on the slopes of Cerro Chato, a dormant volcano next to Arenal.

The way down to the pool

To reach the bottom you go down a staircase of more than 500 steps among trees, ferns and the growing sound of the water. At the bottom, the waterfall forms a pool of cold, clear water. The way down is easy; the climb back up is the real workout.

A community project

The waterfall is managed by a local community association, and the entrance fee is reinvested in the area. It is a good example of tourism that directly benefits the people who live around these landscapes.
